Trainer Fergal O’Brien expressed his sentiments following the tragic demise of Highland Hunter at Cheltenham on Tuesday. O’Brien found solace in the fact that Highland Hunter had now reunited with Keagan Kirkby.
Kirkby, who had cared for the grey chaser during his time under champion trainer Paul Nicholls, shared a close bond with the horse. Kirkby, aged 25, met with a fatal accident during a point-to-point fall in February. Highland Hunter, recently victorious at Newbury, led Kirkby's funeral procession in Ditcheat village.
During the Ultima Chase at the Festival's opening day, Highland Hunter, guided by jockey Paddy Brennan, took the lead with some impressive jumps. However, the 11-year-old faded rapidly after the third-to-last fence and despite the swift efforts of course veterinarians, his life could not be saved.
The yard, particularly Scott Sainsbury and Sophie Kelly who cared for Highland Hunter, mourned the loss deeply. The passing of Ose Partir, trained by Martin Brassil, in the Boodles Juvenile Hurdle added to the sombre day.
A spokesperson from the course stated that Highland Hunter received immediate attention from veterinary professionals but tragically succumbed. Ose Partir suffered an injury during the sixth race and was euthanised. The course offered its condolences to the connections of both horses.
