Trainer Shark Hanlon is contemplating an alternative racing avenue for Hewick, weighing the possibility of entering the Aintree Bowl instead of the upcoming Grand National. This decision follows the deliberate choice to bypass the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup, a move described as challenging by Hanlon.
Hewick, a nine-year-old who secured victory in the King George after an unfortunate stumble in last year's Gold Cup, was gearing up for another attempt at the prestigious race before being primed to carry top weight in the renowned steeplechase event at Merseyside. However, with reservations about the soft ground at Prestbury Park, Hanlon is now considering the Aintree Bowl as the next target for his prized horse.
Reflecting on the situation, Hanlon stated,
"The decision not to participate in the Gold Cup was not taken lightly. After inspecting the track this morning, it is unlikely to improve given the anticipated rainfall. It's regrettable to come this far, but our focus now shifts to Aintree. The odds are evenly split between the National and the Bowl, with one being the chosen path. Given the circumstances, I am leaning towards the Bowl. Providing Hewick with another chance at the Gold Cup is appealing, and I am cautious of the risks associated with the National. The horse is in exceptional condition, displaying peak form. This verdict was no easy task, considering the efforts made by the horse and the commitment of the owners, but it has been made."
