Hanlon has his sights firmly set on the Aintree Bowl as Hewick's next target

Hanlon has redirected his attention towards the Aintree Bowl for Hewick, instead of the Grand National.

The decision to scratch the top weight from the prestigious race was made in order to focus on a Grade One goal. After an impressive win in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, the plan was to pursue a double triumph by targeting both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the renowned steeplechase at Aintree.

However, due to unfavourable ground conditions, Hanlon opted to withdraw his star horse from the blue riband event. He revealed that he is now considering a switch in focus towards Aintree, aiming to give Hewick the best chance at future Gold Cup glory.

The County Carlow trainer confirmed this plan, indicating that after the Aintree Bowl, Hewick may also compete in the Punchestown Gold Cup in early May.

Hewick's decision to leave the Grand National results in Gordon Elliott's Conflated taking the lead in the Aintree field.
