Ground Conditions Key in Next Steps for Chianti Classico
Chianti Classico’s next race will hinge on ground conditions following his commanding win in the Sodexo Live! Gold Cup at Ascot. Trainer Kim Bailey’s seven-year-old, carrying a top weight of 12 stone, showcased his class in this season debut, adding to his Ultima Handicap Chase victory at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
Bailey now faces a variety of potential paths, including a first appearance over the Grand National fences in the Becher Chase or a shot at Grade One honours in the Betfair Chase. “It was a very good performance,” Bailey commented. “There are all sorts of options. We’ll see how he comes out of the race in a week or 10 days and see what the weather does. He really would prefer softer ground.”
The Coral Gold Cup at Newbury appears the least likely choice, while the Betfair Chase may be on the table, depending on the field size and ground conditions. Chianti Classico’s impressive form has also sparked talk of a potential Cheltenham Gold Cup bid, but Bailey is keeping expectations measured: “He’d need another 10 pounds before he becomes a Gold Cup horse, and he’s only been raised five for his Ascot win.”
Bailey also shared updates on stablemate Trelawne, who seeks soft ground after missing an engagement last weekend. If conditions allow, Trelawne will likely head to the graduation chase at Haydock on Betfair Chase day, with Bailey echoing the sentiments of many in racing: “Like everybody else, we’re wanting some rain.”
