Grey Dawning Now on Course for King George VI Chase

Trainer Dan Skelton has confirmed Grey Dawning is firmly in contention for the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, following an exceptional recovery from his runner-up finish in the Betfair Chase.

Initially hesitant about targeting the festive feature, Skelton has been swayed by how well the Cheltenham Festival winner has bounced back.

“I was determined not to let myself be persuaded, but I can’t believe how well he’s come out of the race,” Skelton said after saddling Royal Infantry to victory at Haydock. “Even the next day, he looked great. At the moment, he’s going to Kempton unless something changes.”

Grey Dawning impressed in the Betfair Chase, finishing second to Royale Pagaille, despite challenging conditions. Skelton believes a return to better ground at Kempton could unlock further potential.

“He’s won at Kempton before, albeit in a handicap hurdle, but the test suits him. In the Betfair, he was excellent until tiring late on that heavy ground. On better conditions, I think he could look very impressive.”

“The King George looks open this year, especially with doubts over some Irish contenders. Grey Dawning has improved significantly in his first run in open company, and even the handicapper agrees. He’s a real player on Boxing Day.”

While Skelton remains realistic about future targets, including the Gold Cup, he’s optimistic about Grey Dawning’s chances of shining at Kempton.

“Whether he’s a Gold Cup horse is yet to be seen, but in the King George, given his progress and the potential field, he’s got a serious shot. We’ll see him at his best when conditions fall in his favour, whether that’s at Kempton or later in the season.”

The decision to target Kempton underscores Skelton’s confidence in Grey Dawning’s ability to step up in open company this campaign.
