Energumene is progressing well in his recovery from an injury that prevented him from going for a third consecutive win in the Champion Chase. Owned by Tony Bloom, Energumene is determined to return to the track this winter after missing the entire 2023-24 season due to a leg injury.
After suffering the setback last autumn, there are positive signs from Closutton as the 10-year-old has been enjoying some time on grass before beginning the tune-up process for the upcoming season later in the summer.
According to Sean Graham, Bloom's racing manager, Energumene's tendon injury was not serious, but precautions were taken to ensure his full recovery. The horse has been on grass since June and will likely return to training in August, taking it slow to monitor his injury.
Despite stablemate El Fabiolo attempting to fill the void left by Energumene in last season's Champion Chase, the team is hopeful that their star performer will return to his best form this autumn. Plans may include races like The Hilly Way at Cork and the Clarence House, with a potential return to Prestbury Park for the Champion Chase.
Graham emphasised the importance of taking things one step at a time and not planning too far ahead. While they are disappointed about the missed opportunity last season, they are focused on getting Energumene back to peak performance for the upcoming races.
