Graffard is optimistic about Calandagan’s chances at York
Francis-Henri Graffard is optimistic about Royal Ascot winner Calandagan’s prospects in the Juddmonte International at York. The Gleneagles gelding, who has shown impressive form this year, will face a top-class field including Derby and Eclipse winner City Of Troy and Derby runner-up Ambiente Friendly.
Calandagan, a versatile performer, has excelled on various ground conditions, including a win at Royal Ascot on good to firm. Graffard is confident he’s ready for this high-level test, given the track’s suitability for his long stride.
French contender Zarakem is using this race as a prep for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Despite a disappointing Group One debut, Zarakem ran well in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and is expected to handle York’s fast ground.
Clive Cox’s Ghostwriter, third in the Eclipse, faces a challenging draw but is in good form. Cox is hopeful for a strong showing despite the less-than-ideal position.
Japanese St Leger winner Durezza, making his UK debut, is seen as a class act who will thrive at distances between 10 furlongs and a mile and a half.
Alflaila, trained by Owen Burrows, is a course specialist with solid form in Group races at York. Owner’s racing manager Angus Gold is hopeful for a competitive performance.
William Haggas’ Maljoom, who finished second in the Sussex Stakes, is expected to benefit from a step-up in trip. Jockey Tom Marquand is confident he’ll handle the longer distance.
Israr, moving up to Group One level after winning the Listed Wolferton Stakes, is well-regarded by Shadwell’s Richard Hills, who expects him to perform strongly at York.
