Gordon Elliott Gears Up with Strong Squad, Led by American Mike
American Mike looks set to lead Gordon Elliott's charge in the Bar One Racing Troytown Handicap Chase at Navan next weekend. Highly regarded since his second-place finish in the 2022 Champion Bumper behind Facile Vega, American Mike hasn’t consistently fulfilled his early promise. Though he won on his chasing debut last season, his form later tapered off. Now, with a handicap mark of 145, Elliott aims to capitalise on his refreshed condition for a race he’s known to dominate.
Speaking at the Navan Racing Festival launch, Elliott expressed his fondness for the local track. "As a Meath man, I love coming to Navan," he said. "It’s a very fair track, and the best horse usually wins here. On his day, American Mike is very good. He’s in top form, and though he’s a bit unpredictable, he looks well now. We’re hoping for the good American Mike to turn up."
Although Elliott typically fields a large team for this event, drier ground conditions may slightly reduce his lineup this year. Potential runners include Chemical Energy, Favori De Champdou (rain-dependent), The Goffer, Fakir d’Alene, and Riaan, who will appreciate the firmer ground.
Jack Kennedy, expected to ride American Mike, is optimistic: "He’s great fresh, loves Navan, and has a nice weight. When he’s on-song, he gives an incredible feel and jumps really well."
Elliott also shared high hopes for the rest of his stable, including prospects like Wingmen, Qualiminta, and The Yellow Clay, who are shaping up as promising contenders in various Navan races this season. With a talented novice team and support from committed owners, Elliott’s sights are set on adding to his past successes in the Troytown Handicap Chase.
