Robbie Geoghegan and Kevin Heffernan, from Galway, celebrated a big win. They won with Brilliant Question. It was in the Follow Limerick Racecourse On Instagram Opportunity Handicap Hurdle. Geoghegan won on Noble Talent. It was his first track double. Athenry-based owner/trainer Heffernan also got his first racecourse win.
Brilliant Question is a Gutaifan grey. He showed promise with a fourth-place finish in November. It was over the same course and distance. She started as an 11/1 chance. Geoghegan expertly guided her. He took a patient approach before a decisive move before the last hurdle. She extended her lead in the run-in. She finished five-and-a-half lengths ahead of Carlas Big Jim and Jack Gilligan, who were in second place.
Go Gill Go finished third, while the early 9/2 favourite, Pana To Milan, ended disappointingly in ninth.
Heffernan is a farrier in Galway. He expressed his delight at getting his first win on the track. He had many placements and 25 point-to-point victories. He highlighted the challenge of winning in Irish racing. He praised Brilliant Question. The horse had been placed five times on the Flat.
Heffernan also mentioned his small team. It has seven horses and his nephew Andrew Flaherty. Andrew plays a crucial role in their training.
Reflecting on his first double as a pro, Geoghegan acknowledged the sport's challenges. But, he emphasized how days like this make up for the tougher times.
