From Initial Triumph to Unparalleled Success: Mullins Emerges as a Dominant Force at the Festival

In the year 2000, the idea that a single trainer would reach nearly 100 winners at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival seemed absurd. Nicky Henderson had secured 20 victories, while Willie Mullins had only six, with four in the Champion Bumper. Fast forward to the present, Mullins is close to reaching 100 wins, needing just six more to reach the milestone. Over the years, Mullins has maintained an impressive average of about four wins per Festival, achieving a remarkable 10 wins in 2022. Mullins' consistency has set a high bar that seems unbeatable.

Looking back at Mullins' Cheltenham successes, we recall some remarkable horses on his roll of honour:

  • Tourist Attraction (1995 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle):  Mullins' first Cheltenham Festival victory, showcasing his talent early on.
  • Cousin Vinny (2008 Champion Bumper):  A standout win, especially memorable as it marked the first Festival victory for his son, Patrick.
  • Quevega (Mares’ Hurdle 2009-2014):  Despite initial doubts, Quevega's Cheltenham dominance made her a legend.
  • Hurricane Fly (Champion Hurdle 2011 and 2013):  An iconic horse, achieving a rare feat of regaining the Champion Hurdle crown.
  • Vautour (Various wins between 2014-2016):  Known for his exceptional natural talent, Vautour delivered stellar performances at Cheltenham.
  • augheen (Various wins between 2014-2015):  A popular figure trained by Mullins, consistently showing unbeatable form.
  • Douvan (Various wins between 2015-2016):  A talented yet fragile contender, Douvan displayed brilliance but faced setbacks.
  • Al Boum Photo (Gold Cup 2019 and 2020):  Al Boum Photo's victories in the blue riband race marked a significant milestone for Mullins.
  • Allaho (Ryanair Chase 2021 and 2022):  Allaho's perfect match with the Ryanair Chase proved to be a winning combination.
  • Galopin Des Champs (Martin Pipe 2021 and Gold Cup 2023):  A strong contender with promising potential, Galopin Des Champs has shown remarkable form at Cheltenham.

As Mullins continues to rewrite Cheltenham's history, his legacy and the exceptional horses he has trained will be remembered for years to come.
