Equal Standoff Between Bookmakers and Bettors on Football-Centric Day at Cheltenham

A competitive encounter unfolded between the punters and the layers on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival as football took centre stage alongside the racing action on day three.

The backers made a strong start as Grey Dawning, a 5-2 joint favourite, secured a victory for the skilled Dan Skelton team in the Turners Novices’ Chase. However, the bookmakers regained momentum with Sir Alex Ferguson's duo, Monmiral (25-1) and Protektorat (17-2), delivering an exciting day for the former Manchester United manager at Prestbury Park.

Despite Jeremy Scott's Golden Ace providing a moment of joy for the bookies later in the day, the victories of heavily supported favourites Teahupoo and Inothewayurthinkin meant many punters departed the Cotswolds track with their pockets brimming.

Coral's David Stevens remarked,

"Grey Dawning kickstarted the punters' day, while Monmiral and Protektorat found favour with their supporters, possibly Manchester United fans. Shakem Up’Arry, Teahupoo, and Inothewayurthinkin also enjoyed significant backing."
"Golden Ace's triumph in the Mares’ Novice Hurdle was a highlight for us,"

said Stevens,

"but as we approach the major betting day of the week, it's an even contest in footballing terms."

BoyleSports' spokesperson, Lawrence Lyons, reflected on the day's events, saying,

"Thursday was a rollercoaster ride with some notable outcomes in our favour. Gordon Elliott made an impact, and the favourite in the final race gave punters cause for celebration ahead of a crucial day."

With punters currently leading 2-1, the stage is set for an exciting Gold Cup Friday. One devoted racing enthusiast had a stroke of luck on St Patrick’s Thursday, pocketing a substantial £16,195 from a £5 multiple bet on three horses owned by renowned football personalities.

Following Monmiral and Protektorat's victories, Redknapp's Shakem Up’Arry completed the 3,239-1 treble, much to the delight of the fortunate punter. Betfair's Barry Orr noted, "The punter's passion for both racing and football is evident. Cheltenham represents the pinnacle of the horseracing world, and for both ex-managers to achieve success on this grand stage is truly remarkable."
