Adrian McGuinness has clearly unlocked Cherry Pink's potential, as the Elzaam mare secured her second career win in the Gilna's Cottage Inn Handicap.
Previously winless in 17 starts for her former connections, the four-year-old has now won two of her four races since joining McGuinness's Co Dublin stable.
Initially priced at 5/1, Cherry Pink was eventually backed into 11/4 joint-favourite for the six-furlong race. Ridden by Adam Caffrey, she was held at the rear before making a strong move on the outside from the two-furlong marker. She surged to the front with 200 yards to go and held on to win by half a length.
Spirit Of Eagles, at 18/1, produced a notable performance to finish second under Shane O'Callaghan, while UK raider Mokkaatil, backed down to 6/1 from 3/1, took third, a length and a quarter behind the runner-up. Rumbled Again, the other joint-favourite from Gavin Cromwell's stable, finished fifth after drifting from 8/1.
"I initially thought the distance might be too short for her, as she's not really a sprinter," McGuinness admitted. "However, Adam gave her a great ride, and she responded well."
Looking ahead, McGuinness is considering options for Cherry Pink, including a potential run in Dundalk on Friday. "I’d love to target Listowel next week if the handicapper’s adjustments are favourable. She seems to perform better over longer trips with some give in the ground," he added.
