Eleanor Broderick’s Fairyhouse Triumph: A Dream Come True
At 70 years old, Eleanor Broderick achieved a lifelong dream at Fairyhouse on Wednesday, securing her first-ever victory under official rules with Lisleigh Lad. This milestone win in the INHSC Supporting Point-To-Points Hunters Chase saw the 11-1 shot storm to a dominant six-and-a-half-length victory, showcasing his top form from the point-to-point circuit.
Broderick’s deep connection with racing spans decades. A veteran of Ireland’s golden era of amateur riding, her prior successes were confined to the point-to-point scene, both as a trainer and jockey. Reflecting on her monumental achievement, Broderick, nearing her 71st birthday, expressed her joy, noting that winning a hunters chase had been a lifelong aspiration. She credited her success to her supportive team, including her partner Matt Slattery, rider Grace, and jockeys Eoin O’Brien and Darragh Allen.
Her racing journey was deeply influenced by her father, Donald, who was a passionate horseman from Listowel and active in the Avondhu Hunt. Broderick reminisced about riding alongside legendary names such as Timmy and Johnny Callaghan, Pat Healy, and even Ted Walsh, recalling their kindness during her early years in the sport.
Lisleigh Lad, owned, bred, and trained by Broderick, had already proven his abilities with two point-to-point wins, including a notable victory over 2021 Galway Plate winner Early Doors. Broderick explained that the six-year-old had returned this season in improved form, adding that his fitness and straightforward nature were key to his commanding win at Fairyhouse. Despite a rival falling at the last fence, she believed Lisleigh Lad was destined to triumph regardless.
Looking ahead, Broderick plans to keep Lisleigh Lad competing under rules rather than returning to point-to-point races. She praised his jumping ability and hinted at bright prospects for the future, while also mentioning promising young horses in her stable that may debut next year.
