Do Deuce Triumphs in Japan Cup

Home favourite Do Deuce, ridden by the legendary Yutaka Take, claimed victory in a thrilling Japan Cup at Tokyo Racecourse, extending Europe’s winless streak in the prestigious race.

Take, securing a record fifth win in the event, kept Do Deuce at the rear early before making a wide move around the home turn. The five-year-old quickened impressively to seize the lead a furlong out, holding off late challenges from Shin Emperor and Durezza, who dead-heated for second, a neck behind.

Trained by Yasuo Tomomichi, Do Deuce has been a standout on Japan’s racing scene, despite inconsistent form following his 2022 Derby victory over Equinox. Back-to-back Grade One wins, including last month’s Tenno Sho (Autumn), reaffirmed his class and positioned him as the one to beat.

"He was extremely calm before the race, which gave me confidence," said Tomomichi. "Although the slow pace caused some concern, he showed remarkable acceleration and tenacity to fend off strong challenges. This was his best performance yet."

Europe’s challenge was led by Goliath, who finished sixth, with Aidan O’Brien’s Auguste Rodin placing eighth in his final career start. Germany’s Fantastic Moon ended in 11th, marking another year without a European winner since Alkaased in 2005.

Take reflected on his enduring partnership with Do Deuce and the significance of this victory:

"The slow pace required adjustments, but his speed and stamina shone through. This horse is truly exceptional," he said. "His retirement is imminent, but I’m honoured to ride him once more in the Arima Kinen."

Do Deuce now eyes a farewell in December’s Arima Kinen, hoping to cap his illustrious career with another commanding performance.
