Deira Mile might take a winter break

A winter break may be in store for St Leger fourth Deira Mile, although a potential run in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hasn't been completely ruled out. Owen Burrows’ Camelot colt also finished fourth in the Derby at Epsom.

After a quiet summer, he returned to the Listed August Stakes at Windsor, finishing a close second after an 84-day layoff. He then tackled the St Leger at Doncaster, where he originally crossed the line third before being demoted to fourth for bumping Sunway.

Burrows mentioned the Arc as a possible target, but he also indicated that Deira Mile might have run his last race this season. "We’re assessing whether he’s done for the year. The owner did suggest the Arc, but we’ll see how he is and may choose to save him for next season."

Burrows acknowledged the colt's ability, noting his performances in top races. "He’s shown he’s not far off the top level, and ideally, a stronger pace would have helped."

Stablemate Nakheel, who won the Group Two Park Hill Stakes, might also take a winter break. The Prix de Royallieu on Arc weekend is a possibility, but Burrows is taking a cautious approach. "She seems fine but has only had a couple of canters. Sheikh Ahmed wants to keep her in training next year, so she may have done enough this season."

He added that while Nakheel isn’t currently entered for the race in France, they could supplement her if necessary. "She’s well-bred and should improve with another winter," he said, expressing optimism for both horses' futures.
