Deira Mile is set to race in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur
Deira Mile, last seen finishing a commendable fourth in the Derby behind City Of Troy, is on track to compete in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur at York on August 21.
Trainer Owen Burrows indicated that the only reason Deira Mile would miss the race is if the ground conditions are deemed too fast. If that happens, Burrows plans to give him a racecourse gallop instead, as he considers the St Leger distance ideal for the colt and doesn’t want to jeopardise his Doncaster prospects.
Burrows stated that Deira Mile is in good shape and the plan is to run him in the Voltigeur. However, if the ground at York turns out to be very fast, he might opt for a racecourse gallop instead.
He noted that they have always believed the Leger is the right race for Deira Mile, so they would not want to risk him before that. Burrows emphasised that they are working towards the Voltigeur, but ground conditions will be crucial.
While he did not expect York to let the ground get too quick, he acknowledged the unpredictability of the weather. Good ground would be ideal for Deira Mile, but they will monitor the situation as it develops.
