Deira Mile heads straight to Doncaster

A bid for Classic glory in the Betfred St Leger remains on track for Deira Mile despite his narrow loss at Windsor on Saturday.

The Camelot colt, making his first start since finishing fourth in the Derby behind City of Troy, was a strong favourite for the Listed August Stakes. However, he couldn’t catch the front-running Sea Of Roses, who won by a neck under a clever ride from Hayley Turner.

Trainer Owen Burrows expressed his frustration but is optimistic, saying, "It was disappointing not to win, but the race was a bit messy. I’m not too disheartened by the performance."

Burrows added, "We needed this race as a prep for the Leger. It was slightly shorter and messier than ideal, but Hayley got her fractions spot-on. We’ll head straight to Doncaster for the Leger as planned."
