Daniels showcases his expertise with debutant Master

First-time winner Getaway Master secured trainer Richard Daniels' second victory today, triumphing in Limerick's Follow Limerick Races Instagram Handicap Hurdle under the ownership of Tom Moran, also based in Galway.

Jockey Danny Mullins, bound for Cheltenham, was a late replacement aboard the seven-year-old, who secured a spot in the 18-runner field following Eddies Pride's withdrawal. Positioned in the middle of the pack, Getaway Master surged to the front before the final hurdle, comfortably outpacing Imbolc to claim the win.

Daniels, hailing from Loughrea, celebrated his second win after previous success with 11-year-old Whatsafellatodo last May, expressing gratitude to Norman Lee for the opportunity. Reflecting on his journey into training amidst the pandemic, Daniels shared,

“I ventured into training during COVID after my experience in point-to-pointing. My brother and I handle our two horses, and we intend to maintain a modest operation.”

Mullins' tactical approach was lauded by Daniels, who commended the jockey for his patient handling of Getaway Master throughout the race. Co-owner Moran, a seasoned figure in the equestrian world, revealed the horse's backstory, noting,

“We acquired him as a three-year-old from a large stable, where he struggled. The personal touch provided by a smaller yard was instrumental in his development.”

Moran, a stalwart supporter of local talent, extended his well wishes to the Gilligans ahead of Cheltenham, expressing his commitment to backing regional trainers.
