Vanillier aims to improve on last year's Grand National runner-up finish
Vanillier, last year's Grand National runner-up, has emerged as the front-runner to clinch the prestigious title this year. Following the release of the weights for the upcoming Randox Grand National, Gavin Cromwell's grey has been established as the ante-post favourite amongst bookmakers.
Having achieved a commendable rating of 147 in the previous edition, where he secured a notable second place behind Corach Rambler at Aintree, Vanillier will now be competing from a mark of 151. This rating secures his spot in the starting lineup, which will be limited to 34 runners this time around.
Reflecting on their performance last year, Cromwell shared,
"Securing second place in the Grand National was a moment of great pride for us. However, one can't help but ponder on the 'what ifs' when you finish so strongly”.
Cromwell further expressed his ambition, stating,
"Winning the Grand National is every trainer's ultimate aspiration, and we are prepared to give it our best shot once again this year."
If top-weight Hewick participates, Vanillier will carry 10st 8lb during his return to Merseyside. Despite a string of less-than-stellar performances this season, Cromwell has remained steadfast in his focus on the Grand National.
In response to Vanillier being named the 12-1 favourite by the official betting partners of the Grand National, William Hill, Cromwell responded with a chuckle,
"I won't dwell on that too much, but I do hope they are onto something!"
Cromwell also has three other potential contenders for the National in Letsbeclearaboutit (10st 10lb), Limerick Lace (10st 4lb), and Malina Girl (10st 2lb). Discussing their prospects, Cromwell mentioned,
"Letsbeclearaboutit is a possibility for the race. If all goes well at Cheltenham, he will likely make an appearance at Aintree. Limerick Lace is being considered for Cheltenham, with the option of Aintree still open. Malina Girl, though lower down the pecking order, is someone we would like to see compete if feasible”.
Corach Rambler, closely trailing Vanillier in the betting at 14-1, and Panda Boy, with odds cut to 16-1, are among the notable contenders. Gordon Elliott's duo of Delta Work and Galvin have seen their odds shortened to 25-1, while Mr Incredible's odds have widened to 40-1 despite an allotment of 10st 7lb.
