Contemplating the Morebattle: Crawford's Consideration for Brucio
Potential winner at Kelso identified after Leopardstown’s success.
Stuart Crawford is closely monitoring the bet365 Morebattle Hurdle as plans are devised for Brucio, the victor at Leopardstown. The six-year-old, owned by Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, has shown promise over hurdles. Following a triumphant outing at Catterick in January, Brucio clinched Listed honours at the Paddy Mullins Mares Handicap Hurdle during the Dublin Racing Festival.
While an entry at the Cheltenham Festival beckons for the Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, Crawford remains uncertain about participating at Prestbury Park. Notably, Brucio also holds a spot in Kelso’s feature handicap on March 2.
Crawford reflected on the recent Fairyhouse win, expressing pleasant surprise at the victory. Uncertainty looms over Cheltenham, as Crawford weighs the mare's future plans and evaluates various opportunities to secure prize money or further successes.
Irish contenders have excelled in the Morebattle since its revival as a handicap in 2021, exemplified by The Shunter’s victory in the Borders before triumphing at Cheltenham. Crawford, having come close to success in the race with Saint D’oroux, believes Kelso could be an ideal platform to bolster Brucio’s credentials while competitors focus on Cheltenham.
Acknowledging the allure of Cheltenham, Crawford remains pragmatic about the value of Kelso’s race. Emphasising the significance of potential winnings, he anticipates monitoring Kelso closely as a more lucrative alternative for Brucio compared to Cheltenham. Considering the handicapping challenges ahead due to Brucio's performance at Leopardstown, Crawford remains optimistic about her competitive edge in such a prestigious race.
Reflecting on Brucio’s journey from a promising debut at Punchestown to her transition to hurdles, Crawford highlights the mare's adaptability and progression in the jumping discipline. Despite early setbacks in bumper races, Brucio has found her stride over hurdles, hinting at further growth and success in her future endeavours.
