Clash of Titans in Winter Derby Trial: Military Order and The Foxes Face Off

In the upcoming BetUK Winter Derby Trial at the Nottinghamshire track, extended to 11 furlongs, all eyes are on the exciting rematch between Military Order and The Foxes. Both ex-Classical trial winners, they bring a rich history of competition. Military Order, trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin, is looking to rebound from a disappointing season, including a last-place finish at Epsom. Following a four-month break and a gelding operation, hopes are high for a comeback.

The Foxes, under Andrew Balding’s guidance and representing King Power Racing, also have much to prove. Despite finishing fifth in the Derby and second in the Belmont Derby, The Foxes are looking to recapture past triumphs, including a notable win in the Dante.

The field is further strengthened by the inclusion of Claymore, trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam. After winning the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2022, Claymore's recent performance in Deauville, where he finished second in a Listed race, signals a return to form. Chapple-Hyam is optimistic about Claymore's chances, particularly over the 11-furlong distance.

Base Note, a recent winner in the Winter Oaks, adds to the competition under the Simon and Ed Crisford banner. Group Two winner Sir Busker and Ian Williams' Enemy, also part of the six-strong lineup, are set to make the race a challenging and wide-open contest.

Appleby remains cautiously optimistic about Military Order, acknowledging the drop in trip might play to his strengths. He won over 10 furlongs at Newbury and a mile and a half at Lingfield earlier in his career. Chapple-Hyam is equally hopeful, eyeing the Winter Derby as Claymore's next target, depending on his performance in this trial.
