Christophe Soumillon claimed a victory in Qipco Stakes
Christophe Soumillon is determined to one day claim victory at Epsom, celebrating his successful return to the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes with a second win on the formidable Goliath.
Eighteen years have passed since the celebrated Belgian jockey guided Hurricane Run to a triumph in this prestigious race, racing in the colours of Michael Tabor under the guidance of master trainer Andre Fabre.
While that win came after a fierce struggle down the Ascot straight, Soumillon’s latest ride aboard the 25-1 French contender transformed the summer highlight at Berkshire into a near procession.
Recalling his 2006 experience, he noted how overwhelmed he felt at the time, but this occasion allowed him to fully appreciate the victory as he cruised to the finish.
Soumillon contrasted his recent victory with his experience on Hurricane Run, an Arc winner, noting the ease of his ride today compared to a fierce battle last time. He reflected on his past triumph, admitting he didn't fully appreciate it then, but now feels immense pride in his new success.
With Goliath's clear advantage, Soumillon was able to wait for the right moment to unleash his horse, impressively surpassing a field of top competitors. He felt confident riding behind other jockeys and praised Goliath’s effortless acceleration when he asked for more speed. He credited trainer Francis-Henri Graffard for their successful preparation, emphasising the challenges French horses face in the UK.
At 43, Soumillon remains a top jockey with aspirations to win the Epsom Derby. He’s grateful for every opportunity and experience in his career, declaring he still has much to offer and will continue riding until he chooses to stop.
