Cheltenham Celebrates Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup Centenary

Cheltenham played host to a prestigious gathering on Monday, welcoming some of the biggest names in jump racing to commemorate the centenary of the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup. The celebrations included a special Legends Lunch, inviting all living former winning Gold Cup trainers and jockeys to raise a toast to the iconic race.

Established in its current form in 1924, the Gold Cup has seen legendary horses etch their names in history. Notable champions include the five-time winner Golden Miller, the three-time victors Cottage Rake, Arkle, and Best Mate, as well as the sole grey horse to triumph, Desert Orchid.

Among the attendees was Simon Sherwood, reminiscing about his memorable victory in 1989 with Desert Orchid. Sherwood expressed his deep admiration for Cheltenham, describing it as a place like no other, where the atmosphere and the passion of the crowd create unforgettable moments.

Reflecting on Dessie’s versatility and popularity, Sherwood highlighted the horse's remarkable ability to compete over varying distances and conditions, capturing the hearts of racing fans across the country.

Sherwood's recollection of the triumphant Gold Cup race showcased the intense emotions and thrill of the competition, as he navigated the challenging course with Desert Orchid, culminating in a historic victory that left a lasting impression on all present.

The Legends Lunch also saw the presence of esteemed jockeys Rachael Blackmore and Ruby Walsh, each with their own remarkable achievements in the sport. Blackmore, the only female jockey to clinch victory in the Gold Cup, and Walsh, the most successful Festival rider, shared their insights and experiences, adding to the rich tapestry of the event's celebrations. Walsh's partnership with Kauto Star in securing back-to-back victories in 2007 and 2009, a feat unmatched in Gold Cup history, stood as a testament to the enduring legacy of this prestigious race.
