Charyn secured a dominant victory in the Prix Jacques le Marois
Charyn's outstanding season continued with a dominant victory in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville. The grey horse, trained by Roger Varian, has been flawless this year, beginning with a win in the Listed Doncaster Mile and following up with a triumph in the bet365 Mile at Sandown.
At the Group One level, Charyn was a strong runner-up in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury but improved to win the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. His form made him a strong favorite for Deauville, where he was ridden by Silvestre de Sousa. The field of eight was reduced by one when Richard Hannon's Haatem was withdrawn.
John and Thady Gosden’s Inspiral, who has previously struggled with slow starts, was once again tardy out of the gates. Charyn, however, was always well-placed, tracking the pace set by Big Rock. As the race progressed, Varian’s four-year-old lengthened his stride and pulled away, winning by three lengths from French 2000 Guineas winner Metropolitan, with Inspiral finishing third.
“It was a comfortable watch, I can't wait to see it again,” said an emotional Roger Varian about Charyn, praising the horse's continued improvement makes training easy. Varian expressed excitement for owner Nurlan Bizakov, noting Charyn's impressive rise from a Group Two winner to his current form. The victory earned Charyn a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, but Varian is considering domestic races, including the Moulin and the QEII at Ascot.
John Gosden commented on Inspiral’s slow start, emphasising that giving top-class horses a significant lead is detrimental to winning. Mario Baratti praised Metropolitan’s performance despite finishing third, mentioning the colt's potential for growth and improvement moving forward.
