Celandine secured a victory at York
Celandine powered to a front-running victory in the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes at York, overcoming a field of competitors. Starting as a 13-2 shot for trainer Ed Walker and jockey Tom Marquand, the filly excelled in her return to fillies-only races after recent efforts in the Prix Robert Papin and Molecomb Stakes.
Breaking swiftly, Celandine set the pace and held off challengers, with Time For Sandals making a late surge but falling just short. Celandine won by a neck, with Queen Mary Stakes winner Leovanni finishing a length and a half behind in third, and the favourite Heavens Gate in fourth.
Betfair now rates Celandine at 8-1 for the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket next month, down from 16-1.
A thrilled Ed Walker remarked on the victory's excitement, reflecting on past disappointments at Goodwood and France. He praised Celandine’s toughness and speed, noting her improved performance in today’s race. Walker is now eyeing the Cheveley Park Stakes and possibly the Breeders’ Cup.
Runner-up Time For Sandals’ trainer Harry Eustace was pleased with the performance, attributing the loss to lack of experience. Eustace is considering one more run for the filly this year, potentially in the Tattersalls Ireland sales race or another black-type event. He anticipates that the filly will mature into her sprinting role next year.
