Caldwell Potter Takes the Next Step in Cheltenham’s Chase

A standout performer in his debut for the Ditcheat yard earlier this month, Caldwell Potter dominated his Carlisle appearance as a 2-11 favourite, leading from the front to win the two-mile contest by five lengths. Though he jumped left throughout, Nicholls believes the gelding is poised for success as he steps up to an extended two-and-a-half miles at Prestbury Park.

“He made a perfect debut for us at Carlisle, jumping well despite being a bit left-handed, and finished strongly,” Nicholls told Betfair. “This race is an ideal opportunity to give him more experience over fences, particularly at Cheltenham. He’s been working well at home and is ready for the next step up the ladder.”

The grey is the race favourite in a competitive five-runner field, with a strong performance potentially positioning him as a leading contender for Cheltenham Festival honours in March.

A High-Profile Purchase

Caldwell Potter has a notable backstory, having won the Grade One Paddy Power Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown last December under Gordon Elliott’s care. The gelding was later sold for a record €740,000 at Tattersalls Ireland to a syndicate that includes Sir Alex Ferguson, Ged Mason, John Hales, and Peter Done.

Reflecting on the acquisition, Ferguson admitted to initial apprehension about the price but expressed excitement following the horse’s successful debut for Nicholls.

“Caldwell Potter took my breath away,” Ferguson told Sky Sports Racing. “The bidding went beyond what we expected, but he looked classy at Carlisle. At that price, he’s got me dreaming—he better deliver!”

Challengers in the Line-Up

Caldwell Potter faces stiff competition, notably from Jango Baie, who debuts over fences for Nicky Henderson. A Grade One hurdle winner, Jango Baie showed consistent form last season with two wins and three runner-up finishes.

Jonjo and AJ O’Neill’s Springwell Bay, carrying a weight penalty, adds further intrigue, while Deafening Silence represents Dan Skelton under the ride of Harry Skelton. Laura Morgan’s Ballymackie rounds out the field in this Class Two contest.

With a promising field and significant implications for the season ahead, all eyes will be on Caldwell Potter to see if he can solidify his status as a future Festival contender.
