Burrows considers international options for Alflaila

Owen Burrows is considering international options for Alflaila after a disappointing performance in last week’s Juddmonte International at York.

The five-year-old, who had previously defended his title in the York Stakes, struggled in what was expected to be a standout race. After a slow start, he finished 12th out of 13, trailing 24 lengths behind the winner, City Of Troy. Burrows has now ruled out a second attempt at the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown next month.

"Alflaila just had an off day," said Burrows. "He can be slow away, and you can’t afford to give a head-start in races like this. Jim Crowley eased him off once it was clear he wasn’t going to make an impact. We’ll explore options abroad, as the Irish Champion Stakes doesn’t suit him. There are a few possibilities to consider."

Alyanaabi, another horse from the Shadwell-Burrows stable, also underperformed at the Ebor Festival, finishing poorly in the Strensall Stakes. After promising runs earlier in the season, including fifths in the 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes, Alyanaabi’s recent performances have been disappointing.

Burrows added: "Alyanaabi will have a thorough check-up and then go back to Shadwell for a break. His recent runs have been below expectations, so we’ll get him sorted and plan for next season."
