Paul Gilligan is preparing Buddy One for a challenge in the Stayers' Hurdle, following a formidable display over a similar distance at Cheltenham back in November.
The progeny of Sans Frontieres clinched victory by a length in the Paddy Power Games Handicap Hurdle, covering an extended two miles seven furlongs, setting the stage for another compelling outing at Prestbury Park.
The seven-year-old gelding encountered a setback in his recent appearance at Leopardstown's Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle, where he was withdrawn due to a diagnosed sore back.
Speaking to Racing TV, the trainer expressed his optimism, stating,
"He's in excellent condition. I took him to Navan for a workout after the races on Sunday, and he performed admirably".
Gilligan elaborated on his plans, confirming,
"The aim is to target the Stayers' Hurdle with him. Following his discomfort at Leopardstown, we've been attentive to his needs, ensuring his back is adequately treated".
Highlighting the significance of such horses in his stable, the trainer reflected,
"It's truly rewarding to have horses of his calibre. After dealing with lower-grade events for some time, progressing with such talented individuals is immensely fulfilling".
Recalling past triumphs at Cheltenham, Gilligan reminisced,
"We secured victory in the Albert Bartlett in 2010 with Berties Dream, and during the November meeting, Buddy One added to our successes, setting the stage for the festival itself".
Apart from his Cheltenham achievements, Buddy One has also secured wins in Galway and Fairyhouse over hurdles. Notably, his previous appearance at Cheltenham resulted in a commendable third-place finish in the Martin Pipe at the festival last year.
