Trainer Henry de Bromhead is optimistic that Rachael Blackmore, the record-breaking Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National-winning jockey, will be back in action within the next few weeks.
Blackmore has been sidelined since suffering a neck injury in a fall at Downpatrick in late September. In her absence, Darragh O’Keeffe has taken the reins on many of De Bromhead’s horses, securing notable victories with Envoi Allen at Down Royal, Quilixios at Naas, and Senior Chief at Cheltenham.
De Bromhead provided a positive update on Blackmore’s recovery, with hopes she will return before Christmas: “She was here the other day, and it was great to see her. She looked fantastic and was in really good form,” De Bromhead told Sky Sports Racing. “She’s understandably a bit frustrated, but she’s working really hard to get back. As far as she’s concerned, she could have returned a month ago, but she’s wisely followed the doctors’ advice. Hopefully, she’ll be back by mid-to-late December.”
Envoi Allen Likely to Target King George VI Chase
De Bromhead also revealed that Envoi Allen is being strongly considered for the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day.
The 10-year-old delivered a stunning performance to reclaim his crown in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase earlier this month and is now poised for a second attempt at the King George, having underperformed in the race two years ago.
“He was brilliant at Down Royal—his attitude and ability to keep coming back are incredible,” said De Bromhead. “He’s been in great form since, and we’re leaning strongly towards the King George. We weren’t right when he ran two years ago, and he didn’t show his true self. We’d love another crack at it, as he has the profile for the race.”
With Blackmore’s return on the horizon and Envoi Allen eyeing Kempton, the festive season could prove a fruitful one for De Bromhead’s yard.
