Brittany Russell Poised to Make Maryland Racing History

Maryland's Leading Female Trainer Eyes Historic Achievement

As the Laurel Park's fall meet approaches its final days, trainer Brittany Russell is on the brink of a historic milestone in Maryland racing. The 34-year-old leads the annual trainer standings and could become the first woman to achieve this feat in Maryland's history.

A Trailblazing Journey

Russell, already a pioneer in Maryland racing, is in a close race with Jamie Ness, leading 115-113 in winners at Laurel and Pimlico Race Course for 2023. Last year, she made history by winning multiple training titles in Maryland, including at Laurel's spring meet and Pimlico's Preakness Meet.

Russell's Perspective on Her Success

Russell's focus has always been on doing her best for her horses and clients. She views her potential milestone as unique but emphasizes that gender doesn't play a role in her approach. "The woman thing, honestly, I don't think about that," Russell stated, underlining her commitment to excellence in her field.

Final Races of the Season

As the season concludes, Russell has entries in three races each on Friday and Saturday and two on Sunday. Ness, her closest competitor, has entries across all three days, with a powerful presence on Sunday.

Record-Breaking Year for Russell

2023 has been a remarkable year for Russell, setting personal bests in starts, wins, and purse earnings. Nationally, she ranks 11th in wins and 16th in purse earnings. Her career was highlighted by winning the Grade 1 Carter Handicap with Doppelganger at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Acclaim from the Racing Community

A prominent owner, Stuart Grant of The Elkstone Group, praised Russell for her skills and dedication, noting her competitive edge even against top trainers at more lucrative tracks. "She's good, and she cares. She's got a good team and lives and breathes this stuff," Grant said.

Russell's Career and Legacy

Since branching out on her own in 2018, Russell has amassed 418 wins and over $17.5 million in purse earnings. Her journey includes valuable experiences working with notable trainers such as Brad Cox and the late Jonathan Sheppard. As the current racing season nears its end, Russell's achievements highlight her skill as a trainer and her role in reshaping the landscape of Maryland racing.
