Breeders’ Cup might be the next step for Khaadem

Khaadem may head back to America for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint after a strong second-place finish behind top US sprinter Cogburn at Kentucky Downs on Saturday night.

The eight-year-old, who defended his Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes title at Royal Ascot in June, had a mixed campaign with lacklustre runs in the July Cup and Prix Maurice de Gheest. However, he regained form with a runner-up effort in the Grade Two Ainsworth Turf Sprint Stakes, ridden by Jamie Spencer.

Trainer Charles Hills commented: "Even though he’s eight, this is all new to him. His gate speed was an issue, and he found himself too far back against a very good horse like Cogburn. But he came through the rest of the field well, and I’m pleased with his performance. We might consider the Breeders’ Cup as a possible next step."

Cogburn, who won with a decisive three-and-a-quarter-length margin, is a formidable contender for the Breeders’ Cup after completing a hat-trick of victories this year.

Trainer Steve Asmussen praised Cogburn, saying: "He’s an incredible horse. To validate his form with another win in such a competitive field is very special. He demonstrated his extraordinary speed, and we’re fortunate to be associated with him."

Jockey Irad Ortiz added: "I didn’t have to do much; he carried me all the way. Since Steve brought him back from his lay-off, he’s matured both mentally and physically. He’s been outstanding this year."
