Bowen Considers Alternatives for Gold Cup Day: 'I Might Be at Ffos Las or Fakenham'
Sean Bowen hints at prioritising winning opportunities over Festival rides during Cheltenham week, aiming to close the gap with Harry Cobden in the jump jockeys’ championship.
Bowen's progression was hindered by a knee injury suffered on Boxing Day, causing him to be sidelined until early February. Despite Cobden holding an 11-victory lead, Bowen clinched his first win since his return at Kelso on Saturday.
While Cobden is set to have a strong lineup of Cheltenham rides for Paul Nicholls, Bowen might explore other options to bolster his title challenge. Bowen expressed,
“I might attend the first day for Not So Sleepy and could consider competing elsewhere depending on track conditions. I need to secure victories.”
Being part of Olly Murphy’s stable, Bowen's return to action has pleased the trainer, who acknowledged the challenges the jockeys face in the title race. Murphy highlighted Bowen's resilience in overcoming his injury and emphasised the pressure both young riders endure to become champion jockeys.
In a notable departure, both Cobden and Bowen have distanced themselves from three-time champion Brian Hughes, who has previously skipped Festival days to focus on lower-profile races. Murphy praised the talent of the title contenders, viewing their spirited rivalry as beneficial for National Hunt racing.
Reflecting on the competition between Cobden and Bowen, Murphy commended their professionalism and character, expressing satisfaction in having Bowen as part of his team. He concluded by emphasising the positive impact of their rivalry on British racing, wishing success for both jockeys in the championship battle.
