Black Forza defeated the favourite in Markel Richmond Stakes

A fast-finishing Black Forza caused an upset by defeating the favourite, The Strikin Viking, to win the Markel Richmond Stakes for Irish trainer Michael O’Callaghan.

Much of the pre-race attention centred on Wathnan Racing’s recent acquisition, The Strikin Viking, who started as the 11-10 favourite. He quickly took control of the six-furlong race.

Although Tropical Storm mounted an early challenge, trainer Hamad Al Jehani appeared on track for his first British turf victory as The Strikin Viking surged ahead at the final furlong marker.

At that point, Black Forza was seemingly out of contention at the back of the field, but he soon accelerated under Dylan Browne McMonagle. The son of Complexity powered down the inside, swiftly overtaking six rivals and eventually surpassing The Strikin Viking in the closing stages to secure victory at 9-1 by half a length.

O’Callaghan expressed his delight at winning the Richmond, noting the significance of the victory and the horse's background. He praised the colt's talent and strong finish, mentioning plans to evaluate future race options. He also highlighted the horse's adaptability to turf despite being American-bred.

Wathnan Racing's Richard Brown commented positively on The Strikin Viking’s performance as the favourite, noting potential improvements with James Doyle now familiar with the horse. Brown believes there are promising opportunities ahead, particularly considering the Gimcrack Stakes.
