Big result for Big Mojo

Big Mojo displayed an impressive burst of speed to clinch victory in the Jaeger-LeCoultre Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood.

His stablemate, Mr Lightside, led the Group Three contenders early on as they made their way down the centre of the track, while Arran raced in solitary confinement near the rails on the opposite side.

Trained by Mick Appleby and representing last year’s winning connections of Big Evs, Big Mojo settled comfortably in midfield before being urged to challenge as they neared the final furlong.

With a powerful kick, Big Mojo surged ahead of Mr. Lightside, ultimately winning by three-quarters of a length under Silvestre de Sousa at 25-1. The favourite, Aesterius, finishing strongly at 2-1, managed to secure second place by a head at the line.

Appleby remarked that he holds Big Mojo in high regard, similar to how he views Big Evs, though he couldn't distinguish between him and Mr. Lightside. He praised both as excellent two-year-olds, noting that it's fantastic for the owner to have another promising horse and a significant boost for the team.

He mentioned that while Big Mojo could potentially be as good as Big Evs, he is definitely a solid and very good horse. Appleby couldn’t separate him from Mr Lightside during a recent workout, as both have demonstrated remarkable talent and run exceptionally well. At this stage, they wouldn’t be far behind Big Evs. There’s a possibility that both could head to America for the Breeders’ Cup, but first, Big Mojo is set to compete in the Gimcrack at York.

The owner also expressed a wish for his wife to give the winning speech at the Gimcrack dinner, indicating that this was the primary target for Big Mojo.

Winning owner Paul Teasdale added that they purchased Big Mojo shortly after the Breeders’ Cup last year. His debut at Beverley showed some greenness, but he performed admirably.

Teasdale noted that Big Mojo has made tremendous progress. Although they initially considered entering him in a maiden race, they decided to trust Mick and enter him in the Molecomb, confident in his abilities.
