Mick Appleby believes York's track record might be at risk as Big Evs aims to overcome last year’s disappointment in the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes.
Although Big Evs secured a win at York earlier this season, his previous attempt in the Nunthorpe was a rare blemish in his impressive career, where he finished near the back. However, after a thrilling victory in the King George Stakes at Goodwood, he returns to York with strong momentum.
Appleby noted, “He came out of Goodwood in great shape and is in top form. He’s drawn 14 of 14, which could be either an advantage or a disadvantage. We’ll see how it plays out, but with a fast pace expected and good ground, I wouldn’t be surprised if the track record falls.”
Jockey Tom Marquand shares Appleby’s optimism and is eager to put last year’s performance behind them. Marquand said, “Asfoora defeated us at Ascot, but we turned the tables at Goodwood. York’s speed track should suit Big Evs better than Ascot did. Despite Asfoora’s 6lb advantage, I believe we have a good chance to win again.”
Trainer Henry Dwyer is excited about Asfoora's return to York, calling it their “grand final” of the season. Dwyer praised Asfoora’s condition, saying, “She’s in the best shape I’ve ever seen her. We’re confident she’s fitter and ready for this race.”
Asfoora and Big Evs, who were separated by only a short head at Goodwood, have developed a friendly rivalry off the track. Dwyer added, “The Big Evs team and Mick Appleby are great people. We enjoyed catching up with them after Goodwood and hope to continue this positive rivalry.”
Defending champion Live In The Dream, trained by Adam West, is back at York aiming for another victory. Along with George Boughey’s consistent Believing, they add depth to the competitive field, which also includes dual Royal Ascot winner Bradsell, who returned to form recently at Deauville.
Fawzi Nass’s racing manager, Oliver St Lawrence, expressed hope for Bradsell’s performance, “Archie Watson says the horse is in excellent form. Hollie Doyle was pleased with him at Deauville, and we hope he shows his best at York. He’s drawn in stall three, so we’re hoping for a good pace and dry conditions.”
Ed Bethell’s Regional, along with course winners Starlust and Clarendon House, also adds to the quality of the field.
