BHA expressed deep sadness over the losses

The British Horseracing Authority has launched an investigation following the deaths of four horses at Newton Abbot's National Hunt card on Tuesday afternoon. The meeting, which included seven races on good to firm ground, resulted in an unusual number of fatalities, prompting the governing body to promise a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incidents.

In a statement, the BHA expressed deep sadness over the loss of the horses and extended sympathies to all those involved in their care. The organisation emphasised the seriousness of the situation, noting that while multiple deaths at a single fixture are rare, each case will be carefully examined to understand how they occurred. Additionally, a report will be compiled on the condition of the course to address any potential concerns regarding the racing surface.

Newton Abbot Racecourse's managing director, Patrick Masterson, also expressed sadness over the tragic events and pledged to cooperate with the BHA's inquiries. World Horse Welfare echoed the importance of the investigation, emphasising the need for ongoing efforts to improve safety measures for National Hunt horses.

Roly Owers, chief executive of World Horse Welfare, called the deaths tragic and stressed the urgency of reviewing the incidents. He highlighted the significance of the Jump Race Risk Model analysis being conducted by the BHA and the Royal Veterinary College to enhance the safety of horses and jockeys in the sport.

The organisation eagerly anticipates the results of the BHA's investigation and hopes that measures will be implemented to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
