Asmussen's Joy in Winning the Breeders' Cup Classic
Legendary trainer Steve Asmussen, with over 10,000 career victories, holds a special fondness for his Breeders’ Cup Classic wins with Curlin and Gun Runner. Throughout his extensive four-decade career, Asmussen has won nearly every major race, but the Classic stands out as a pinnacle of achievement and pride.
At 58, Asmussen has captured the Classic twice, and as he anticipates this year's race featuring City Of Troy—a contender for Aidan O’Brien's first Classic win—he reminisces about the profound emotions tied to his past champions. “Winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic is an indescribable feeling, especially when they validate the faith, I had in them,” he shares.
His first Classic success came in 2007 with Curlin, whose impressive career solidified his status in racing lore. Despite being the underdog against Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, Curlin triumphed in the Classic, underlining his exceptional talent. Asmussen reflects, “It was a culmination of a great year facing tough opponents, and Curlin proved to be the best when it mattered most.”
A decade later, Gun Runner delivered a remarkable performance that further showcased Asmussen’s prowess. “He overcame significant challenges in the Classic, demonstrating true champion qualities,” Asmussen stated. Gun Runner exited the sport on a high note, further cementing Asmussen’s legacy as one of the sport's greatest trainers.
