Appleby hopes Penzance can keep improving on the pitch

Penzance, coached by Mick Appleby, will now focus on the grass following a successful winter that included a second-place finish on All Weather Finals Day at Newcastle.

Previously trained by Simon and Ed Crisford, the grey made three starts on the all-weather course and twice on turf without bringing up a victory.

After making 31,000 guineas in the Tattersalls auction ring, he was then sold to The Horse Watchers, who took him up at Appleby's Rutland yard.

After being gelded, he hasn't looked back. He finished fourth in his first race with new connections and went on to win four straight, raising his mark from 73 to 98.

He entered the BetUK All-Weather Easter Classic Middle Distance Handicap at Newcastle based on the latter rating and raced a well-pleasing performance to come second behind Adrian Murray's maybe excellent Elegant Man and take home almost £50,000 in prize money.

That supporting material conveys Elegant Man's intelligence and raises Penzance's profile as he gets ready for a turf battle.

“He’s been good since Newcastle, he ran very well and I think he just bumped into a very good horse,” Appleby stated.

“We’ll get him on the grass and see how he does on it, I suppose we’ll start him off in a big handicap, I would imagine, and then up him to Listed class after that.”
