Anna Bunina is set to spearhead John McConnell's small team at the upcoming Cheltenham festival.
The Stamullen trainer is anticipating the participation of six runners at the prestigious event, with a particular focus on the mare's appearance in the Pertemps Network Final on Thursday.
Lieutenant Mayne, another contender from McConnell's stable, is eyeing an entry in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper scheduled for Wednesday. Reflecting on the team's prospects, McConnell expressed realism about their status as underdogs in the races.
"I think we will have six (at Cheltenham) - we are very much outsiders in the races,"
he remarked.
Regarding Anna Bunina's chances in the Pertemps, McConnell conveyed optimism, deeming it her prime opportunity for victory.
"More than likely Anna Bunina will go for the Pertemps, we think it is her best chance of actually winning. If she stays the three miles, she could run a big race,"
he stated.
The focus then shifted to Lieutenant Mayne, described as a "lovely horse" by McConnell. Should he secure a place, McConnell anticipates a commendable performance.
"My horse in the bumper, Lieutenant Mayne, is a lovely horse. If he gets in, he will run a nice race,"
he added, acknowledging the fierce competition awaiting them.
While McConnell's team prepares for Cheltenham, the trainer has also planned entries for some of his horses at Chelmsford on Good Friday towards the end of the month. Noble Crusade and Mulgrave are earmarked for the 1m6f race at Chelmsford, with McConnell optimistic about Mulgrave's chances.
"Chelmsford might suit Mulgrave better than Lingfield, he was a bit unlucky there last year (Easter). The race is framed beautifully for him - it is a 66-82, I think,"
McConnell elaborated.
Furthermore, Yokkell is also being considered for an appearance at Chelmsford, indicating McConnell's strategic approach in mapping out his team's racing calendar.
