Anglers Crag Sets Sights on Scottish Grand National Summit
Anglers Crag has set his sights on the Scottish Grand National following a gritty triumph in the Eider Chase at Newcastle.
The nine-year-old appears to have acclimated well to life at Brian Ellison's stables, clinching victory in all four outings since joining the yard at the start of the current season.
Securing wins in handicap chases at Carlisle, Market Rasen, and Musselburgh—where he triumphed by an impressive 11 lengths—the gelding, ridden by Henry Brook, entered the Newcastle race as an 11-2 shot.
Facing testing conditions on heavy ground and tackling a challenging four-mile and half a furlong distance, Anglers Crag showcased remarkable stamina to secure victory by a neck. The triumph was a source of pride for owner-breeder Derrick Mossop, who also bred the dam.
In response to this success, the handicapper has raised Anglers Crag's rating by 8lb, placing him at a career-best mark of 134 and positioning him favourably for significant staying handicaps.
The upcoming target for Anglers Crag is the Scottish Grand National, scheduled to take place over four miles at Ayr on April 20.
Expressing his satisfaction with the horse's performance, Ellison remarked,
"He's as tough as they come, and he's emerged from the race in fantastic shape. His progress has been exceptional, exceeding our expectations. We are thrilled with his development."
Ellison also credited jockey Andy Robertson for playing a crucial role in Anglers Crag's improvement, noting,
"He has formed a strong bond with the horse, spending quality time with him and aiding in his overall settling. The partnership has been instrumental in Anglers Crag's recent success."
Looking ahead, Ellison confirmed the plan to target the Scottish National, stating,
"It's the natural next step for him, and the handicapper has duly recognized his achievements by raising his rating by 8lb. The owner has been incredibly supportive, and witnessing a horse you've bred perform so well is truly rewarding. We anticipate more success in the future."
