Al Nayyir Sets Sights on Champions Day

Tom Clover's Al Nayyir is eyeing the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup following an impressive victory in the Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes.

The six-year-old, who began his career with Charlie Appleby, has had a diverse racing journey with stints in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and France under his former trainers. After joining Clover mid-season, he made his debut for the new stable in the Lonsdale Cup at York, where he finished a close second, just a short head behind Vauban.

After that strong Group Two showing, Al Nayyir was the favourite for the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes at Newmarket, where he dominated the race, winning by a remarkable eight lengths under jockey Luke Morris.

The prestigious staying event on Champions Day has been mentioned as a potential target, with the gelding expected to face off against Kyprios at Ascot on October 19.

"Al Nayyir is doing great; he came out of the race in excellent condition, and we're very pleased with him at home," Clover shared. "He looks fantastic, and we hope for a smooth run to get him to Champions Day. That's the plan, and we're really excited about the opportunity."

Clover added, "We'll take it one day at a time, but it would be wonderful to have a campaign for him through the winter. We're aiming for Champions Day first, and hopefully, he can run a massive race. We're looking forward to it, and fingers crossed he can get close to Kyprios."
