Cannon: Edwardstone Poised for Cheltenham Festival

Tom Cannon is optimistic about Edwardstone's prospects in the upcoming Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, believing that a replication of his recent Game Spirit triumph could position him as a key contender in the prestigious event.

Under the tutelage of Alan King, the talented chaser showcased a remarkable return to form with a commanding front-running victory at Newbury, marking his first win since the 2022 Tingle Creek. Breaking a streak of six consecutive defeats, the 10-year-old has emerged as the general 8-1 third-favourite for the Champion Chase, trailing behind El Fabiolo and Jonbon.

Reflecting on Edwardstone's resurgence, Cannon expressed confidence in the horse's capabilities and strategic adjustments for the upcoming challenge. According to the jockey, if Edwardstone reproduces his Newbury form, they can anticipate a strong performance at Cheltenham. Given a tactical shift, Cannon aims for a closer battle with Jonbon, with further success being a welcomed bonus.

Recalling Edwardstone's triumph at the 2022 Arkle Festival Cannon highlighted the disappointment of the previous year's Champion Chase where the horse finished fifth. However, buoyed by Edwardstone's current form, the jockey is optimistic about the horse's improved condition and performance outlook for this season.

Cannon elaborated on Edwardstone's transformation, noting the horse's enhanced form and competitive spirit throughout the current campaign. He stated that compared to last year, Edwardstone has entered this season in superior shape. His recent races at Cheltenham have proved his renewed vigour and competitive edge to the jockey, setting an encouraging tone for the Champion Chase.

Anticipating the upcoming challenge, Cannon emphasised the importance of maintaining a consistent rhythm and expressed confidence that the race will ultimately be decided by which horse is the best on the day. With Edwardstone's revitalised form and promising performances, the stage is set for an exhilarating showdown at the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase, where the seasoned chaser aims to make his mark once again.
