Zariygann made a strong debut at Roscommon

Trained by Michael Halford and Tracey Collins, Zariygann made a strong debut over hurdles in Division II of the Curragh To Curragh Cycle Maiden Hurdle at Roscommon, rewarding those who backed him with odds of 11/2 early on. The four-year-old, who was well-supported throughout the afternoon, started as the 5/6 favourite under Jack Kennedy.

Zariygann was prominent throughout, taking the lead from Pearl Of Grange as they entered the straight. He maintained control from three out, with San Franco emerging as a challenger but falling two out while still trailing.

Michael Halford remarked that Zariygann has the size and scope for hurdling but acknowledged the usual nervousness associated with a debut in this discipline. He noted that Jack Kennedy reported the horse jumped well, only missing one hurdle due to his own error. Halford advised Kennedy to give Zariygann plenty of daylight to see the hurdles, and Kennedy felt the horse performed nicely. Halford also highlighted that Zariygann is well-bred for the task.

Halford added that extensive schooling had been done with Zariygann at home, with Tommy and Josh also working with him a few times. Although he has only schooled on grass twice, the trainer was pleased to get this race experience.

Looking ahead, Halford suggested that a mix of races would likely be planned for Zariygann. He believes that, being quite raw on the Flat, a few runs over hurdles will help the horse settle.
