Willie Mullins is set to showcase some of his brightest talents at Punchestown on Saturday, highlighted by a thrilling clash between State Man and Lossiemouth in the Unibet Morgiana Hurdle, as well as the much-anticipated chasing debut of Ballyburn.
State Man, who was flawless last season, will look to defend his Morgiana Hurdle crown. The seven-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign, including victories in the Matheson Hurdle, Irish Champion Hurdle, and Punchestown Champion Hurdle, culminating in his first Cheltenham Champion Hurdle triumph.
This weekend, he faces a formidable opponent in Lossiemouth, an unbeaten mare over three starts last term. With Paul Townend aboard State Man and Patrick Mullins on Lossiemouth, both stars will provide a tantalising preview of the upcoming hurdles season.
Lossiemouth shares top billing with Constitution Hill as Paddy Power's 5-2 joint favourites for the 2024 Champion Hurdle, with State Man closely behind at 3-1.
Mullins fields five of the eight Morgiana contenders, with Daddy Long Legs, Sir Gerhard, and Winter Fog also in the mix. Gordon Elliott’s Brighterdaysahead, fresh off a win at Down Royal, poses the biggest threat outside the Mullins camp.
Another highlight of the day will be Ballyburn’s debut over fences in the Conway Piling Beginners Chase. The six-year-old dazzled last season, claiming four consecutive victories, including three Grade One triumphs at Leopardstown, Cheltenham, and Punchestown.
With expectations high, Ballyburn is poised to dominate as he begins his chasing career.
The Grade Two Boodles Florida Pearl Novice Chase features just three runners, all from Gordon Elliott’s yard and owned by Gigginstown House Stud. Stellar Story, a Cheltenham Festival winner, appears as the standout pick under Jack Kennedy, with Rainbow Trail and Search For Glory completing the field.
With Mullins and Elliott fielding top-class talent, Punchestown promises a day of exceptional racing as the National Hunt season gathers momentum.
