Willie Mullins marked his debut at Sedgefield with a victory, as Mr Escobar lived up to his odds-on billing in the Vickers.Bet Proud To Support British Racing Novices’ Hurdle.
Partnered by Brian Hayes, the six-year-old justified his 1-3 favouritism, securing a four-and-a-quarter-length triumph over Kingston Narcissus, trained by Rebecca Menzies. The win came after Mr Escobar’s second-place finishes in both Flat and hurdle races earlier this year, including at Listowel.
“He’s a bit quirky,” Hayes told Sky Sports Racing. “There was a day at Killarney when he ran out at the first hurdle. But today’s layout, with the hurdles and the better ground on the wide outside, suited him perfectly. He jumped really well and stayed interested throughout.”
Hayes noted the similarities between Sedgefield’s undulating track and Ireland’s Tramore, saying the constant turning worked to Mr Escobar’s advantage.
This marked a strategic decision for Mullins, who sent Mr Escobar to Sedgefield to capitalise on a more suitable opportunity.
“I don’t think he’d have been good enough to win a maiden hurdle in Ireland, so Patrick and Willie decided this would be a better option,” Hayes explained.
On a personal note, Hayes provided an update on his partner, Rachael Blackmore, who has been sidelined with a neck injury.
“She’s recovering well and aiming to be back the week before Christmas,” he said.
Mullins’ Sedgefield debut with a victory underscores the stable’s adaptability and strategic approach to racing opportunities across venues.
