Whirl Claims Victory in Staffordstown Stud Stakes

In an exciting Group Three showdown at the Curragh, Whirl pulled off a remarkable victory, overcoming her more esteemed stablemate, Giselle, in the Staffordstown Stud Stakes. Giselle, who initially finished second to the high-quality Bedtime Story on her debut, recently showcased her potential with a strong performance at this venue. Entering the race as a 10-11 favourite under Ryan Moore, she faced challenges during a hesitant ride from a wide position, ultimately crossing the line fourth, but later promoted to third after a stewards’ inquiry.

In contrast, Whirl, who celebrated her first win at Doncaster last month, delivered a determined front-running effort under jockey Wayne Lordan, securing victory by half a length from Joseph O’Brien’s contender, And So To Bed. O’Brien remarked on the performances, noting Giselle's inexperience, while praising Whirl's tenacity and leadership in the race.

O’Brien also celebrated a second victory for his stable when Rubies Are Red finally broke her maiden in the Bill Hanlon Memorial Fillies Maiden, with Moore in the saddle again. O’Brien highlighted her promising ability and potential for future races, including a possible appearance in the Finale Stakes at the season's end.

Earlier, O’Brien’s search for Classic contenders was boosted by the impressive debut of Saracen, a €500,000 yearling, who eased to victory in his maiden, signalling a bright future ahead.
