Aidan O'Brien-trained Twain seized victory in the Group 1 Criterium International, overcoming inexperience and showcasing his strong potential barely a week after debuting. In a race befitting its “International” title, the only French-trained entry, Maranoa Charlie, faded after an early 10-length lead, diminishing his unbeaten streak.
Patiently ridden, Twain and his stablemate Mount Kilimanjaro commanded the final stages. Despite his greenness, Twain advanced powerfully two furlongs out, edging left in the final stretch, and secured his Group 1 win — justifying his supplementary entry and marking O’Brien’s sixth Criterium International win. Future plans already eye the 2000 Guineas.
Mount Kilimanjaro also impressed, running in grade, showing consistent improvement, and challenging briefly before being forced to shift when Twain came across. His target could be the Prix du Jockey Club next year.
Apples And Bananas, though unable to keep pace with the top two, put in a respectable run in grade. Meanwhile, Maranoa Charlie faltered, his aggressive lead unsustainable against stronger competition and on heavier ground, a lesson for future races.
Spirit of Summer, a maiden, struggled at this level, while Matauri Bay, returning from a nine-week break, was also well held on softer turf and remains one to watch next season.
For sire Wootton Bassett, it was a stellar day, with Twain taking first and Mount Kilimanjaro placing third. This capped a month of notable successes, underscoring his impact in the Group 1 circuit.
