Triumph at Leopardstown: Jerk Secures Maiden Victory

William Durkan's Jerk caused an upset by outstaying the favourite From The Ashes in the QuinnBet Handicap Hurdle, a challenging three-mile race at Leopardstown.

Jerk, ridden by Patrick O'Brien, made a decisive move before the final hurdle, gaining a lead over From The Ashes, who was positioned third at that point.

Despite the strong backing for From The Ashes (9/4f), who pushed into second place after the last hurdle and continued to close the gap, Jerk managed to hold him off by three-quarters of a length at odds of 17/2. Balum finished third, trailing by 10 lengths at 7/1.

Assistant trainer Gary Bannon commented on Jerk's performance, emphasising the horse's resilience and stamina in challenging conditions. Bannon noted that Jerk, who had shown limited potential last season with only one previous race, had significantly improved this year, demonstrating rapid growth and maturity.

Bannon hinted at Jerk's potential as a future chaser, highlighting the horse's progression from race to race. Looking ahead, Bannon mentioned plans for Jerk to have one more run at Punchestown before being rested due to his substantial size.

Bannon expressed gratitude towards the Three D Partnership, acknowledging their generous support and investment in the stable. He credited Bill's sons for their dedication and financial contributions, which have significantly benefited the yard.

This victory marked a significant breakthrough for Jerk, signalling a promising future ahead.
