Tom Marquand sets Economics to compete in the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano

Tom Marquand is eagerly anticipating Economics' return to the track this Thursday in the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at Deauville. The colt, who delivered a dazzling performance in the Dante Stakes, will be making his comeback after a 91-day break. Although it hasn't been long since William Haggas' son of Night Of Thunder impressed on the Knavesmire, the wait has felt extended due to the high expectations surrounding him.

Marquand, who had a front-row seat for Economics' impressive six-length victory at York, is optimistic that the colt's time off has allowed him to mature and strengthen, and he hopes this will set the stage for a successful end to the season.

Marquand expressed his enthusiasm about having Economics back on track, noting, "He remains an extremely exciting horse." He described Thursday as a pivotal day for Economics, as it will help establish his goals and plans for the remainder of the year. Marquand observed that William and Maureen Haggas carefully assess their horses and act accordingly, which is exactly what they have done with Economics. Based on his observations at home, Marquand believes that the decision to give the colt time to develop was the right one and hopes that this will be evident on the track.

Marquand acknowledges the excitement surrounding Economics' performance at York but maintains a realistic perspective on the upcoming challenges. He notes that while it was difficult not to be excited after York, there is always a degree of scepticism when a horse wins so impressively. He points out that the race was run to Economics' advantage and that this should be considered. Despite this, Marquand found the manner of Economics' victory impressive and is eager to see how the colt performs in the competitive Group Two event.

Among Economics' challengers is Ed Walker's Almaqam, who caught attention with his victory in the Heron Stakes and a respectable showing in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Now stepping up to 10 furlongs, Almaqam is expected to improve and could play a significant role in the race. Walker is optimistic about the colt’s prospects and believes the distance change could enhance his chances.

Walker remarked that the upcoming race would be challenging but expressed excitement about having a horse capable of competing at this level. He anticipates that the top three finishers will eventually win Group One races. Walker believes that increasing the trip distance will benefit Almaqam and, with William Buick on board, remains hopeful for a strong performance.

Also in contention is Brian Meehan’s Jayarebe, seeking his third win of the season, and Jean-Claude Rouget’s Arrow Eagle, Safwan, and Wahdan, all of whom are vying for success. Rouget aims for a hat-trick in the race after previous wins with Al Hakeem and Ace Impact. Completing the field is Andre Fabre’s Prix Eugene Adam winner, Bright Picture.
