Joe Tizzard is set to continue his family’s rich history in the BetMGM Haldon Gold Cup, confirming that JPR One will compete in the coveted Exeter race on November 8. This Grade Two event, stretching over two miles and a furlong, has deep roots in the Tizzard family legacy; Joe himself triumphed as a jockey aboard Lake Kariba (1998), Flagship Uberalles (1999), and Cue Card (2012). His victory on Cue Card was particularly memorable, as he rode the horse trained by his father, Colin Tizzard, who also prepared the 2021 winner, Eldorado Allen.
Last year marked a significant milestone for Joe, as he secured his first training victory in the race when Elixir De Nutz triumphed, ridden by his nephew, Freddie Gingell. This year, Tizzard hopes to defend his title with JPR One, who showcased his talent by winning the Grade Two Lightning Novices' Chase at Lingfield earlier this year.
Having previously won at Exeter, JPR One boasts a promising record, including a debut victory against 2024 Grand National winner I Am Maximus. Tizzard is optimistic about JPR One’s prospects, confirming that he has always seen Exeter as an ideal starting point for the season. "If JPR One aims to step up, he must perform strongly in the Haldon Gold Cup," Tizzard stated. A strong showing could pave the way for future contenders like the Tingle Creek. With a rating of 149, JPR One is on the brink of greatness.
